RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
